· William Macarthur (son of John Macarthur) imported Fuchsias for his garden at Camden Park as early as 1840. · In 1841 John Bailey listed Fuchsias for sale among other ornamental plants available at his Nursery ‘Bailey’s Garden’ near Hackney in Adelaide · Cheeseman & Sons Nursery in Burwood ( Victoia)listed fuchsias in their 1859 Catalogue · Michael Guilfoyle listed 34 Fuchsias for sale in 1859 at his Nursery in Double Bay. His son, William Guilfoyle as Curator of Melbourne Botanic Garden incorporated Fuchsias in garden beds he designed. · In 1861 the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney boasted a famous ‘Fuchsia Walk; featuring Lye and Lemoine cultivars. · The first Australian Gardening book “The Fruit Flower and Vegetable Gardens’published in 1871 recommended Fuchsias for their beauty and potential in the flower Garden · By 1880 over 400 named Fuchsias were available in Australia · Fuchsias became available in Australia usually within one year of their release in England and Europe even as early as 1840 Pale Pink Fuchsias
Last year a member asked me to suggest some all pink Fuchsias for a garden she was planning. She wanted both trailers for baskets and pots and also plants suitable for in ground planting and pots. She also requested that the plants be ‘not the usual run of the mill’ as she already had Southgate, Pink Marshmallow and Cotton Candy. I compiled a list from which she could choose.
